The Violin
The violin is from the stringed instrument family and is bowed stringed.  The violin is made with 4 strings and turned in 5ths well most of the time.  Its also the smallest and highest pitched stringed instrument.  The violin is often called a Fiddle even thought its really not a Violin.

Violin History

Stringed Instruments were to be plucked at first then went on to using bows in Asia.  The first violins were made with horsehair strings and horsehair bows. Plus lots had a horse head in the neck carved in.  And now the most popular bowed instruments include the Violin, Viola and the Cello.  Plus are known to be from as early as the 10th century.

How Violins Are Made

  • purfling running around the edge of the top

The violin usually has a hourglass figure and a arched top and bottom.  And has 2 upper bouts, 2 lower bouts and 2 concave C-bouts at the waist which allows room for the bow.

Violin Bows

Violin bows are made from a piece of wood with horsehair strings.  And are played from the tips to the heel.

Bows are usually 75cm and about 60g in weight.  And have a screw adjuster to loosen and tighten the strings, located at the heel.  Also a thumb cushion is located the the heel as well.  The winding is usually wire, whalebone or silk.  Student quality bows are made from fiberglass and a plastic winding.

The bow is mostly made with Horsehair or synthetic fiber.  Rosin makes it easier to play and makes it most vibrant.

When you go to buy a violin they're are many things to think of.
  1. Violinists should look at which wood is used and were the wood is from.
  2. Sometime brands matter the most well known for quality include Yamaha Violins for electric

Violin Serial Numbers

Violin Serial Numbers are the numbers found to mark the Violin you have.  Each Violin has a serial number made for just that violin inside.  Usually found in a hole.
